Diaper Bags That Don't Look Like Diaper Bags

You searched for this because you already know the problem. Most diaper bags look like gear. Quilted nylon, a dozen exterior pockets, a pattern that announces "there is a baby somewhere near this woman." You want to carry your kid's things without carrying that.

Carla Gabriela makes two bags, and they were designed backwards from every other diaper bag: start with a handbag you'd want anyway, then hide the diaper-bag parts inside it.

What makes a diaper bag look like a diaper bag (and what we did instead)

  • The material. Nylon and canvas read as utility. Ours are full-grain cowhide leather, handmade by artisans in Guanajuato, Mexico — the same leather and construction you'd expect from a bag that has nothing to do with babies. It ages, softens, and develops a patina that's yours.
  • The changing pad. Usually a clip-on flap of foam that lives on the outside. Ours folds out from the front zipper compartment — a full changing surface, invisible when closed, with its own compartment so it never touches your other things.
  • The wipes situation. Digging through a bag with one hand while holding a baby with the other. Ours have a magnetized leather flap on the front that opens straight onto your wipes. It looks like a design detail. It is the most-used feature on the bag.
  • The silhouette. No exterior bottle pockets, no dangling accessories. Clean shape, short leather handles, and a crossbody strap. Bottle holders are inside, elastic, where nobody sees them.
  • The lining. Water-resistant fabric throughout, so spills wipe out and the outside stays a handbag.

Two sizes, same idea

The Mama Diva Bag — $299

The structured one. 15" × 10" × 3", fits a universal-size laptop, two large diaper pockets, two bottle holders, a large zippered pocket, and the changing pad in its own compartment. Short leather handles plus a thick adjustable cotton crossbody strap. This is the travel-day, airport, museum, whole-day-out bag.

"It holds so much of my daily life without ever feeling bulky or frumpy... The design is sleek, modern, and not overly 'mom-coded.'" — Rachel M., verified buyer

The Mija Bag — $279

The everyday one. Slightly smaller, streamlined, embossed cowhide. Same fold-out changing pad and wipes access, one large zippered pocket, two open pockets, bottle holders — enough for diapers, wipes, snacks and a tablet without the bulk. Leather handles and an adjustable leather crossbody strap.

"The quality is unreal. I use it every day... it's easier to dress it up or down." — Brandy S., verified buyer

Which one?

If you carry a laptop, travel, or have more than one kid in diapers: the Mama Diva. If you want the lightest possible version of "everything I need" for errands and daycare drop-off: the Mija. Both are handmade in small batches, ship in gift-ready packaging, and come with free shipping and returns.

After the diapers

This is the part other diaper bags can't say. When your youngest is out of diapers, the changing pad stays folded away and you're left holding a leather bag you'd have bought anyway. Nothing to retire, nothing to sell on a marketplace. It just becomes your bag.

Frequently asked

Does it actually work as a diaper bag, or is it just a nice purse?

It's a real diaper bag. Fold-out changing pad, wipes access, bottle holders, diaper pockets, water-resistant lining. The difference is that all of it is on the inside.

Is leather practical with a baby?

Cowhide is one of the most forgiving leathers there is — it resists scuffs and wipes clean. We recommend water-based wipes for the built-in wipes pocket (a pack is included with the Mama Diva). Our leather care guide covers milk, spit-up, sunscreen and everything else that will happen to it.

Can dad carry it?

Both bags are unisex in shape and colour (Shedron brown). The crossbody strap adjusts. Plenty do.

Where are they made?

Guanajuato, Mexico, by leather artisans, in small batches. Designed by Carla, a mom, who wanted this bag to exist and couldn't find it. Read her story →
